Terminology Corner
Accountability

To be accountable is the quality of being willingly or unwillingly subject to being called to explain, rationalize and/or justify an action or deed. The term has a wide usage in ethics, finance, politics and administration. In human rights, “accountability” conveys a moral and legal sense of duty that can be based on a human rights norm, such as a treaty obligation. However, the basis for the claim of accountability calls for more-precise terms.
