MENA Regional Consultations-FAO-VG

The FAO Voluntary Guidelines on Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security, reported on in a previous issue of Land Times, were officially endorsed by Committee on World Food Security on 11 May 2012. The Final draft of the guidelines are available in all official languages: English I español I français I русский I العربية I 中国的.

With the guidelines drafted the next step for the FAO is to encourage the adoption and implementation of these guidelines. To further this process, FAO will hold regional consultations across the globe. Thus far consultations have been held for Anglophone Africa (report available in English) in Kigali, Rwanda from 12—14 February 2013 and for Francophone Africa (report available in English and French).

The MENA regional consultations will take place in two locations: Amman, Jordan and Morocco.  From 22—25 April the consultations will be held in Jordan for participants from Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, and Yemen; from 3—7  June the consultations held in Morocco will include participants from Mauritania, Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Tunisia, Lebanon, Palestine, Sudan, and Egypt.

Participation in these workshops is limited to those invited by FAO, and includes persons from government/public sector, civil society, the private sector, and academia and research institutions.

The objectives of these consultations are to:

  1. Present the Guidelines and relevant regional initiatives.
  2. Discuss and analyze the application of the Guidelines in a range of countries and working contexts.
  3. Discuss, identify and propose actions and ways forward to implement the Guidelines and to improve governance of tenure of land, fisheries and forests.
  4. Link with existing initiatives to create networks at regional and national levels.

It is expected that at the close of the workshop the participants will be able to have a better understanding of the guidelines and be able to incorporate them into their activities and development recommendations for activities that would support the guidelines. The consultation also provides a platform for regional networking among the various persons in attendance.

HIC-HLRN will follow these consultations and ensure that all outcomes are shared among the network.
